Hebrew encoding?
Apparently, I'm the only weblogger at antville.org trying to use Hebrew. I added to my main skin the following line:
META HTTP-EQUIV="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1255"
which works just fine on Blogspot and the likes, but here the browser keeps recognising my blog as an English encoded page. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Thx, Einat

The HTTP-EQUIV looks alright, but it's not interpreted by browsers, it's meant to be interpreted by the server. I'm not sure how much you know about that, so here comes the lengthy explanation: When the server sends a page to the browser, it sends a header before the actual document you can see by clicking 'view source' (or something like that) in your browser. This header determines the encoding of this document, and the HTTP-EQUIV="Content-Type" directive is meant to tell the server what encoding to choose.
However, when I fetch your page, the server says '
Content-Type: text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1
' in the header, so I guess it just happily ignores your HTTP-EQUIV directive.I recently posted comments closely related to this issue when another user asked how Antville could be translated to Chinese, but I'm still waiting for responses to my comments by someone who can answer the questions I raised there.
So all I can tell you now is: You're not doing anything wrong, but what you tried to do doesn't work with Antville (or Antville.org anyway). There seem to be a few people interested in alternate encodings (I'm planning to try making Japanese characters work when I have the time), so you should stick around and pester us to do something about it from time to time.
By the way, I can't read a single character of the Hebrew parts of your page, but the characters look okay to me (using Opera 6 here).

Nex, thank you so much for this. I always thought the browser automatically detects the encoding thru the header source, and wasn't aware of the servers role.
I realize of course foreign encoding is not a priority when there still are so many new ideas to implement at antville; and I know that Hebrew is not a must-language anymore... (although I could do without this kind of humor). So I suppose I'll switch back to English, and check from time to time here if alternate encoding finally arrived...
Incidently, I take this opportunity to thank you for sharing here and on your own weblog so many valuable tips!
