after setting my prefs to display one day on the frontpage antville shows nothing - how come?

If I set it to show 3 days - are they still displayed after these 3 days are over OR are they disappearing into the archive, leaving the mainpage empty?

Some of my entries would be reasonably placed under two or more topics. Other than re-creating the article and assigning a different topic, is there any way to do this? The workaround seems a bit wasteful of HHD space. :-)
