Is hosting free?...forever?
Hi Antvillers, I've been checking out and comparing several services and software options for building a weblog lately and have to say, you're doing a great job. Antville is in my point of view definitely the best service out there and it fits my needs perfectly. This is where my question comes in. As I don't have my own server to host a own version of the antville software I need to rely on your hosting. And I wonder what's going the happen, if antville grows on and the need for traffic and webspace rises? (This will definitely happen (reasons s.a.).) How are you going the handle the hosting in future? I've not found any "hosting policy" on the site yet.Are there going to be any fees or limitations? Any banner insertions? It would be a nightmare to put a lot of work into an elaborate site and than wake up to see you're not hosting any more or something like that. greetings cyanblue

First, we're not planning to grow indefinitely. Our "strategy for growth", if you want to call it that, is that at some point we'll restrict weblog creation on antville.org to "old-established" members and hope that other people around the net set up their own antville servers for their local folks.
We don't offer any formal guarantee that we'll continue running antville.org because that would be stupid for us to do, but it's our firm intention to keep it up. We're not dependent on any dot-com business plan to do that, and we definitely won't run banner ads or anything like that. Still, if we ever have to stop running antville.org for whatever reason at some point in the future, we'll definitely provide a way to download whole antville weblogs as XML files (we're working on this feature anyway).
So feel free (and safe) to create your weblog on antville.org, but please dont go over the top when promoting our service to others, especially in large online forums. So far the slow growth that comes with word of mouth has worked very well for us.

Hi hns,
Thanks a lot for the fast answer.
By the way, is this a german run project or are there just plenty of german users?
I was amazed by the number of german comments.

as of now i run 3 fairly important blogs on antville.org. One is for family-business, the other two are job-related, organizing communication between Betriebsräte (in english=shop stewards, i guess). So i am very much depending on reliability - any kind of download would be great for security purposes.

should be stopped i would definitely ask you to inform the users in advance even if this causes an earthquake and a revolution.
there are services in the net, they are free and disappear from 1 day to the next, like guestbooks for example
regarding XML what ist that: .xml (ending?) is this a zipped file? how do i open it and what do i need to read it?
i express my thx to you, your team and your service and hope very much that i will be able to celebrate 1000 days of antville log - this is less than 3 years!
GOOD LUCK + thx 2 U all

hope i explain everything right ;-)
AFAIK xml is extended markup language.
the separation of structure and content is much stricter than in, let's say, html.
the tags can be freely defined in a dtd(document type definition) which is something like css.
you can open the file with an xml-capable browser like amaya.
or use your favourite editor(which should be bbedit, of course) to see the source code.

that the service wont be abolished THÁT soon.
i have a simple MSIE,
dont know much about css and even less about dtd
but thx 4 explanation, eleg.ant!
