Sorry, cannot confirm this bug. Just successfully uploaded an image with the very Safari version (though on another OS X). Pleaes provide a URL of the upload for further investigation.

I uploaded a test image to ppt with Safari, worked like a charm. Also tested to replace the image and it worked, too. I hardly can believe that the same Safari version behaves differently on one OS X version than on the other. Could it be the image you are trying to upload? Maybe it works with another format...? (I am only guessing now.)

you are right.
After trying with different sizes and different pictures, some .jpeg written out in the name of the picture, some just being JPEG with no file extension, it is working, if one does accept the limit of the picture-size AND the picture itself is in the format gif or jpeg AND the picture is named with the correct file extension "beispiel.gif" or "beispiel.jpeg"
thank you for your help, tobi!

It probably would help if there was a more meaningful error message (if there was any at all, anyway)... I will look into this issue of “exotic” files being uploaded.

Could it be that you have switched Javascript off in Safari? There is a known bug that uploading images and files doesn't work in that case: http://code.google.com/p/antville/issues/detail?id=36

I don't know, what I've done - I turned "PopUps unterdrücken" on and off and on again and tried several pictures - if I use a jpeg-picture of the limited size, it now seems to work; I'm able to upload pictures with the new version of Safari, slow, but working
