Disabling comment functions
If I disable the "comment" function in my log, will the comments that have been made up to that point be deleted, or will it just not be possible to add new comments?

nothing will be deleted if you're disabling comments ... but after a short check i'm not sure if that really works like it's supposed to do ... actually, adding comments is possible, but they won't be displayed - but they appear in history-list - so i'd say this is a bug, which will be solved soon.
