are for images what topics are for stories, right. now you can choose a gallery for an image just as you used to choose a topic for a story.
however, there are two cave-ats: the gallery feature has some issues (e.g. that it even links non-members to the privileged image manager) and hopefully will be revamped by the contributors one day.
furthermore, one day it's pretty likely that topics and galleries will be replaced by folders (or something similar).
